Buying a Used AC in Dhaka — The 15-Minute Inspection Guide
A used AC in Dhaka is a real category — one of the more sensible second-hand appliance purchases if you know what you are looking at, one of the fastest ways to lose ৳20,000 if you do not. This is a working 15-minute checklist for evaluating a used split or window AC before you hand over money, drawn from what actually fails in Dhaka’s specific heat, dust, and voltage-instability conditions.
Before the visit
- Confirm the tonnage and age in the initial message. Anything older than 8 years is generally not worth buying used unless the price reflects it (below ৳12,000 for a working 1.5-ton split).
- Confirm indoor and outdoor units are both being sold. Sellers occasionally sell only the indoor unit, or an indoor unit with an outdoor unit from a different brand/tonnage — a mismatch that reduces efficiency and shortens life.
- Ask why it is being sold. “Moving apartment” or “upgrading to inverter” are normal reasons. “Building being demolished,” “landlord replacing,” or “just too old” are also normal. “Started making noise” or “not cooling as well” are warnings.
