Cockroach and Mosquito Control in Modern Dhaka Apartments Without Heavy Chemicals
Every Dhaka apartment tenant has some version of the same monthly pest story — a cockroach in the kitchen at midnight, mosquitoes finding their way past a supposedly sealed window screen, a line of ants along a countertop that appeared overnight. The reflexive response is a can of aerosol spray, which works for a day and creates a residue that lasts weeks. This post is a working guide to the low-chemical approach that actually holds pests down over months, with an honest note on when professional service is the right escalation.
Understand the sources first
Almost every apartment pest problem in Dhaka comes from one of five entry paths:
1. Kitchen drain line. Cockroaches (especially the small brown “German” cockroaches) travel up drain pipes from the building’s shared soil stack. This is the number one route in modern apartments.
2. Balcony door and window gaps. Mosquitoes, small flies, occasionally lizards. Gaps as small as 3mm are entry points.
3. AC drain outlet. The pipe that carries condensate to the outside of the building is a two-way channel. Mosquitoes enter here; some ants too.
4. Garbage chute and shared corridor. If your building has a chute, roaches and rats travel through it. The utility door where garbage staff move around is often left ajar.
5. Items brought in. Bags of rice, cardboard boxes from deliveries, second-hand furniture, houseplants from unfamiliar nurseries. All potential introduction paths.
Fixing pests without fixing the sources is temporary. Every intervention below is more effective when combined with source sealing.
Cockroach control — the low-chemical approach
Sealing entry points
- Drain covers. Install stainless steel mesh covers on all sink drains, bathroom floor drains, and the kitchen floor drain. Fine mesh (1mm gauge) blocks German cockroaches. Cost: ৳150–400 each; permanent fix.
- Sink pipe collar. The gap around the drain pipe where it enters the wall or floor is a highway. Fill with silicone caulk or stainless steel wool + caulk. Cost: ৳300–600 for a tube; one-hour job.
- AC drain non-return valve. A small check-valve on the AC drain hose prevents insects walking back up. Cost: ৳200–500; can be installed by any AC technician.
Boric acid — the workhorse
Boric acid is the single most effective residential cockroach control that is not a heavy synthetic pesticide. It works as a stomach poison for cockroaches, is minimally toxic to humans and pets in normal exposure, and does not lose effectiveness over months.
Application:
- Boric acid balls — mix boric acid powder with atta flour and a small amount of sugar water into small balls. Place behind the fridge, under the sink, in cabinet corners, and along the wall-floor junction of the kitchen. Cockroaches eat the bait, return to their harborage, die, and other cockroaches eat the dead body — chain effect.
- Boric acid powder dusting — a thin dust along baseboards, behind heavy appliances, and along pipe entry points. Cockroaches walk through it, groom themselves, and ingest it.
Where to buy: pharmacies stock boric acid powder in Dhaka (~৳80–150 for a 100g pack). One pack lasts a household 3–6 months.
Cautions:
- Keep out of reach of small children and pets.
- Do not spread on food-contact surfaces.
- Not effective if the surface gets wet — re-apply after any cleaning that might dampen the area.
Gel bait
Combat-brand or generic cockroach gel bait is available at pharmacies (৳300–600 per syringe). Apply pea-sized dots inside kitchen cabinet corners, behind the fridge, and along cracks. Less DIY than boric acid but more targeted. Non-repellent, so cockroaches do not learn to avoid it.
Habit changes that matter
- Dish washing before bed. A wet sink with food debris is an all-night buffet.
- Sealed dry goods. Rice, lentils, flour, biscuits in airtight containers, not open bags on shelves.
- Weekly deep-clean under the fridge and oven. The two most-populated cockroach zones in an apartment kitchen.
- Take garbage out daily during monsoon, twice-daily if you have visible activity.
Mosquito control — the layered approach
Dhaka has three mosquito problems that overlap: dengue-carrying Aedes aegypti (day-biting, active April-November), Culex (night-biting, year-round), and Anopheles (limited malaria risk in Dhaka but present).
Physical barriers
- Window and balcony door mesh screens. The number-one intervention. Custom-fit mesh (fiberglass or polyester) on removable magnetic frames costs ৳400–900 per window and lasts 3–5 years. This alone cuts indoor mosquito load by 80%+ in most apartments.
- Door bottom seals. Rubber sweeps on the entry door prevent walking-in mosquitoes from the corridor. ৳300–600 per door.
- AC drain hose modification as above — the non-return valve blocks mosquito entry.
Standing-water audit
Aedes mosquitoes breed in tiny amounts of clean standing water. Weekly check:
- Plant saucers under indoor plants.
- Balcony corners after rain.
- AC condensate collection tray (some window ACs have one).
- Water-storage barrels or unused buckets.
- Refrigerator drip tray (rare but a source).
Emptying any standing water more than 4 days old breaks the breeding cycle.
Natural repellents that work
- Citronella candles or oils — moderately effective in enclosed rooms; useless in open balcony wind.
- Neem oil diffuser — small drop in an aroma diffuser; light protection.
- Camphor tablets in corners — modest deterrent effect, pleasant smell, cheap.
- Mosquito coils — effective but produce smoke and particulate matter equivalent to burning 75–100 cigarettes per coil. Avoid indoors unless in a well-ventilated area.
Personal repellents
For patio use or during dengue peak season:
- DEET-based — most effective for time outdoors. Odomos is the Dhaka-market brand.
- Picaridin — slightly less irritating than DEET, similar efficacy.
- Lemon eucalyptus oil (PMD) — natural alternative, moderate efficacy for 2–3 hours.
When to escalate to fogging
If dengue season starts and you see mosquito activity indoors despite intact mesh and cleared standing water, coordinate with your building management for common-area fogging. Do not fog inside a residential unit — the pyrethroid residue is not something to breathe. Building-level fogging in stairwells, corridors, and outdoor perimeters is where fogging is appropriate.
Ants, silverfish, and other minor pests
Ants
Diatomaceous earth (food-grade) sprinkled along ant trails and entry points is highly effective and non-toxic to mammals. ৳400–900 for a 500g pack, lasts months. Combine with silicone caulk on visible entry cracks.
Silverfish
Prefer damp, dark spaces — under sinks, in wardrobes, in stored paper. Reduce ambient humidity where possible (silica gel in wardrobes, dehumidifier in monsoon), remove old paper storage, and use boric acid powder in dark corners.
Book lice / dust mites
Both thrive in high humidity. Monsoon-time interventions: run a dehumidifier or AC in the room, air out mattresses and bedding on any sunny day, wash bedding in hot water monthly.
Rats and mice
Rare in modern apartment buildings but present in some older ones. Mechanical snap traps outperform poison bait for a single-flat problem. Do not use poison in a building with pets or small children — the poisoned rodent dies in an inaccessible cavity and creates a worse smell problem.
When to bring in a professional
Professional pest control in Dhaka is available (Rentokil Bangladesh, several local operators). Genuine reasons to call:
- Sustained cockroach population despite two months of consistent DIY treatment — likely a building-wide infestation that needs stack-level treatment.
- Bed-bug detection — this is a job for professionals. DIY bedbug treatment has a very low success rate.
- Termite activity — usually needs both localised treatment and prevention around wooden furniture and fixtures.
- Rat population in an older building.
- Post-dengue-case fogging in your immediate area.
A professional visit typically runs ৳2,500–6,000 for a single-flat treatment, more for whole-building work. Ask what chemistry is being used — gel baits and boric-acid dust are what you want; broad-spectrum aerosol sprays should be a last resort in a residential setting.
The four habits that make the difference
Almost every pest-controlled Dhaka apartment we have seen does the same four things:
- Kitchen drains covered, cleaned weekly.
- Boric acid or gel bait placed at three or four known cockroach traffic points, refreshed every 3–4 months.
- All windows and balcony doors have working mesh; door bottoms sealed.
- Weekly 5-minute standing-water audit.
Everything else is a targeted response to a specific incident. The four habits above prevent 80% of incidents from ever occurring.
