Water Quality by Area — A WASA Report Reading Guide for Dhaka Renters
Every Dhaka apartment tenant knows the tap water is not drinking-grade. Far fewer know what specifically is wrong with it, whether the problem varies by neighbourhood or by month, or which of the eight household filtration options actually addresses the real risk. This is a working guide to the WASA reports that do exist, how to read them, and how the numbers should shape what you spend on filtration.
What WASA measures
Dhaka WASA publishes periodic water-quality reports for its supply zones. The core parameters:
- Turbidity (NTU) — how visually cloudy the water is. Bangladesh standard: below 5 NTU for drinking. Above 10 NTU indicates a treatment failure or a broken supply line.
- pH — should be 6.5–8.5. Outside this range points to source contamination or piping corrosion.
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS, mg/L) — dissolved minerals and salts. Bangladesh guidance: below 1,000 mg/L. Higher does not mean unsafe, but affects taste and can indicate arsenic or iron content.
- Iron (mg/L) — should be below 0.3. Higher gives water a rusty taste and stains laundry.
- Chlorine residual (mg/L) — should be 0.2–0.5 in the tap. Below 0.2 means bacterial regrowth is likely; above 1.0 gives water a strong pool-water taste.
- Coliform / E. coli (CFU per 100 mL) — should be zero for drinking-grade. Any positive result means fecal contamination somewhere in the supply chain.
- Arsenic (mg/L) — Bangladesh standard: below 0.05. Dhaka WASA supply is generally within limits, but private borewells in some areas are not.
How to request the report for your area
WASA has 100 Modhu (zones) covering the city. Reports are periodically published on the WASA website and are available on request from the zonal office. In practice:
- Search for the WASA zonal office covering your address (Modhu-1 for parts of Motijheel, Modhu-2 for parts of Dhanmondi, etc.).
- Request a copy of the most recent quality report — usually free, sometimes with a small administrative fee.
- The zonal office also holds the source data (deep tube-well vs. treatment plant water) for your specific supply line, which matters more than the aggregate zonal report.
If you cannot get the WASA report, buy a home test kit (Sera or similar aquarium-grade multi-parameter kit, ৳1,800–3,500). Run it once. Repeat monthly for three months to see seasonal variation.
What the pattern looks like across the city
We do not have neighbourhood-level authoritative data, but the general pattern reported in academic studies and NGO monitoring:
- Older DND (Dhaka North / South) supply — Old Dhaka, parts of Wari, parts of Mohammadpur — sees the highest incidence of coliform positives, largely due to aged distribution pipes and cross-contamination with sewer lines.
- Mirpur — mixed. Newer sections of Mirpur DOHS and Mirpur 12 use recently installed lines; older Mirpur (parts of Section 1, 2, 6) has periodic issues.
- Uttara — relatively better on distribution but affected by seasonal turbidity spikes during monsoon.
- Bashundhara R/A — mostly not on WASA distribution. Uses private deep tube-wells operated by the developer. Quality varies by block and is not centrally reported.
- Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara — mixed municipal and private borewell supply. Diplomatic-zone buildings often have their own treatment.
The single-largest variance is not neighbourhood but building — the last 50 metres of the pipe run and the building’s underground reservoir. A building with a clean, monthly-cleaned underground reservoir and a good pump has better water than the WASA average for the area. A building with a reservoir last cleaned in 2018 has worse water than the WASA average.
Ask about the building’s reservoir
The overlooked question when renting: when was the underground reservoir last cleaned? Bangladesh building codes recommend twice-yearly cleaning; the reality is once every three to five years in many buildings. Signs of a neglected reservoir:
- Water arrives with an occasional muddy tinge after building pump maintenance.
- The bathroom taps produce visible sediment when opened after a period of low use.
- Filter cartridges (if any tenant has one) clog visibly in 2–3 weeks instead of 2–3 months.
The filtration hierarchy
Match filtration to the risk. Do not over-spend on stages you do not need.
Stage 1 — Sediment filter (5-micron pleated). Handles turbidity and visible particles. ৳400–800 cartridge, ৳1,500–3,000 housing. Every home should have at least this at the drinking-water tap.
Stage 2 — Activated-carbon block. Removes chlorine, some organics, and taste. ৳600–1,200 cartridge. Extends the life of downstream RO membranes.
Stage 3 — Reverse osmosis (RO). Removes TDS, arsenic, and most dissolved contaminants. Whole systems ৳12,000–35,000 depending on capacity and brand. Kent, Pureit, Aquaguard, and a growing number of local brands (Estro, Havit) available in Dhaka.
Stage 4 — UV sterilisation. Kills bacteria and viruses. Necessary if coliform is ever detected. Adds ৳3,000–8,000 to a filtration system.
Stage 5 — Post-carbon polishing filter. Improves taste of RO water, which can otherwise taste flat. ৳400–800.
For a typical Dhaka apartment on standard WASA supply, a sediment + carbon + RO + UV combined unit is the sensible spend. Skip the extras (mineralisation, alkalinity, hydrogen infusion) — they add cost, not health.
The habits that reduce risk without filtration
Even with the best filter:
- Flush the tap for 30 seconds before drawing drinking water in the morning. The water sitting in the pipe overnight has the highest chance of contamination.
- Boil water for 3 minutes for infant formula, medications, or immunocompromised household members. RO alone is usually sufficient; boiling is an additional safety layer.
- Clean the tap aerator quarterly. Sediment accumulates on the mesh and re-contaminates otherwise-clean water.
- Store drinking water in glass or food-grade plastic containers, not open jars. A closed container prevents recontamination from the kitchen environment.
What to add to a lease
For a serious renter, two lines are worth negotiating:
- Landlord to provide the date of last underground reservoir cleaning, in writing, and to clean it before move-in if the last cleaning was more than 18 months prior.
- Landlord to cover the cost of one water-quality test at move-in from an accredited lab (e.g., ITN-BUET or icddr,b) — costs ৳2,500–5,000 and produces a written report you can act on.
The bottom line
Dhaka WASA water is not drinking-grade at the tap, but it is not universally dangerous either. The variance building-to-building matters more than neighbourhood-to-neighbourhood, the risk profile is dominated by bacterial and turbidity issues, and the ৳15,000–25,000 sediment-carbon-RO-UV unit covers 95% of the risk that a typical Dhaka apartment tenant faces. Everything above that is diminishing returns.
